My friend John spent four years at university in Buffalo, New York, so he knows a thing or two about icy cold winters, severe sunlight deprivation, and also the winter blues. By some karmic twist John now finds himself living on a green island inside the Indian ocean, eight degrees south of the equator, but as the days get shorter inside the northern hemisphere he still remembers. He told me he suspected that he suffered in those days from Seasonal Affective Disorder each winter, and that he would fixate on thoughts of sunny beaches and even photos of sunshine during those short, dark days.
